The San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Library has a copy of the Nicholson Book.

The San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society has been able to photograph the Original Plat Maps of the Ranchos of San Luis Obispo County. The Plat Maps are in old books which are archived at the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society.

The surveys of the Mexican Land Grants were ordered by Congress at the time California became a State: This information is available at the SLO County Clerk's Office. The Plat Maps show topography of the area, surveyor's notations, adjacent land areas, roads and creeks.

Because the Plat Maps are historical in nature and contribute to the understanding of how San Luis Obispo County was formed, it is with great pleasure and with the cooperation of both SLOCGS and SLOCHS that we put the images online. A very big Thank You to Kimberly Alfaro, Executive Director [SLOCHS], Michele McCaffrey, Librarian [SLOCGS], Tim Tryon, Photographer & News Letter Manager [SLOCGS] & Martha A Crosley Graham, Projects & Publications [SLOCGS]

El Paso de Robles

In 1887 James & Daniel Drew Blackburn began to sell and divide the land that was part of the original El Paso de Robles Land Grant. The lots were to became part of what is now the City of Paso Robles. A friend of Foy Roberto who is a long time SLOCGS Member gave her a copy of a map that not only shows the lots and their numerical designations, but also includes a listing of owners that was published in the local San Luis Obispo County Newspaper: The Daily Register.

Thank you Foy & Friend!

The Map has been scanned into jpeg images which can be found here. The map is oversized, so there are two images per section: PR-1887a & PR-1887a1 overlap and make a complete section. The owners are listed to the left and are in order of Lot/Block Number.

Biographical Data Index: 1880 > 1920
"Based on the area of 4 former Ranchos: Cañada de los Osos, La Laguna, Pecho y Islay"
The above Biographical Index was compiled in 1985 by Louise Radcliff, SLOCGS Member & Researcher.
The Introduction is dated and some of the information contained therein is no longer accurate.
But, the explanations are still valid and can be found on the second page.
The whole booklet has been scanned and converted to a searchable pdf file.

The County of San Luis Obispo maintains a website that can be used to research old land records. One of the neat features is it's flexibility. Used in conjunction with BLM Records, it becomes a valuable tool in locating the land purcased long ago. Use this link to the BLM Website - Then use this Site to find local SLO Maps and Survey Documents. To effectively use the SLO Maps, be sure to use the drop down box that says "Map Types" - click on "All Maps" - then go to the right and put in either a name or a location [ie Santa Ysabel] or if you have Latitude Coordinates, plug those in the spaces in the center of the screen. The resulting images are tif's and can be blown up to read the names listed on them.

Here is an 1874 Map that shows the Rancho's of San Luis Obispo County. It also shows all the Township & Range Numbers for the County
